One Index, Two Different Weeks

One Index, Two Different Weeks

The Baltic Dry Index closed the week at 2,693, up 5.8% from Monday's 2,546. On the surface that reads as a broad firming. It wasn't. Capesize did almost all the work, climbing 14.4% over four sessions (3,365 to 3,848), while Panamax went the other way entirely, losing 5.9% to end the week at 2,151. Supramax and Handysize barely moved, up 1.2% and 0.4%.

Two segments, two separate stories. On the Capesize side, Fearnleys' Week 43 report points to typhoon Champi disrupting ballaster traffic from China to Australia, tightening tonnage in the Pacific just as C5 West Australia/China held at 14.16 usd/mt and C3 Brazil/China sat at 33.75 to 34.00 usd/mt. A weather event taking ships out of position for a few days is exactly the kind of thing that shows up fast in a thin Pacific Capesize market and just as fast reverses once the backlog clears.

Panamax's weakness looks like a different animal. Nothing in this week's reporting points to a weather or port disruption on that side. What's cited instead is softer US Gulf grain demand and a long list of November ballasters out of the East Coast of South America, both of which read as demand-side, not a short-term operational hit. Fearnleys put the Panamax Transatlantic round voyage at 19,109 usd/day this week, against Pacific round voyage levels for the larger segment near 36,600 usd/day and Continent/Far East TCE above 67,000 usd/day. The gap between the two sizes isn't new this week, but it widened.

The distinction matters for anyone reading the headline BDI number as one market. A Cape rally built partly on a typhoon disruption can unwind as quickly as it built. A Panamax softening tied to demand and a long ballaster list doesn't resolve itself in a few sessions. Worth watching into next week whether Capesize holds its gains once the Pacific backlog from Champi clears, or gives some of this back.
