The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) added a further 32 points on Friday to close the week at 3,089, up 1.0% on the day and extending its recovery from the low-2,600s a fortnight ago. Capesize tonnage did the heavy lifting once again, capping a week in which sentiment on the larger sizes turned decisively firmer.

The Baltic Capesize Index (BCI) rose 1.5% to 5,128, with the underlying BCI 5TC average climbing from $41,395 at Monday's open to $46,512 by Friday's close. The Pacific was the main driver: with major miner activity comparatively restrained but operator enquiry and coal stems steady, C5 rates worked their way up from the mid-$14s early in the week to the low-to-mid $16s by the close, as owners resisted lower bids and bid-offer spreads widened in their favour. The Atlantic added to the tone, with South Brazil and West Africa to China business firming gradually as forward September demand held up and the ballaster list continued to thin.

The Baltic Panamax Index (BPI) gained a further 1.0% to 2,298, building on Thursday's two-month high as tight prompt tonnage in the North Continent and West Mediterranean kept Atlantic rates well supported and Pacific demand from Indonesian coal and North Pacific grain continued to firm. Period activity was a feature through the week, with owners fixing out at increasingly confident levels.

Smaller tonnage told a quieter story. The Baltic Supramax Index (BSI) eased 0.3% to 1,603 and the Baltic Handysize Index (BHSI) slipped 0.2% to 874, both essentially consolidating after weeks of limited direction, with the Continent, Mediterranean and Asia all described as subdued heading into the weekend. With the Atlantic Capesize and Panamax markets carrying clear forward momentum into next week, the desk will be watching whether the smaller segments can catch a bid or continue to lag.
