Market Insight — 09.09.2026: Brent Tests $100 While the Freight Market Barely Moves
Market InsightThe Baltic Dry Index closed Tuesday 8 September at 3,584, up just 9 points. On the freight side of the ledger this was one of the quietest sessions of the month. The move that matters today is on the cost side: Brent crude is trading at $100.02/bbl, up 2.14% on the day (BloombergHT, 09 September, 11:58 GMT+3), testing the triple-digit level for the first time in this cycle. Owners looking only at index prints are watching the wrong screen this morning.
Baltic indices — close of 8 September 2026
| Index | Close | Day change | Average daily earnings |
|---|---|---|---|
| BDI | 3,584 | +9 | — |
| BCI (Capesize) | 6,313 | +27 | $57,253 (+$242) |
| BPI (Panamax) | 2,414 | -17 | $21,724 (-$154) |
| BSI (Supramax) | 1,693 | +11 | $21,403 (+$136) |
| BHSI (Handysize) | 913 | +7 | $16,425 (+$122) |
Capesize remains the only segment carrying real momentum, and even there the daily gain was marginal after last week’s run. Panamax was the single red print, giving back $154/day, as Atlantic cargo replenishment slowed against a lengthening tonnage list. Supramax and Handysize both firmed quietly — the Handysize index has now added points in seven consecutive sessions, a slow grind rather than a rally.
Route levels — Baltic Exchange week of 1-4 September 2026
The Baltic Exchange Week 36 bulk report put C3 Tubarao-Qingdao above $41/mt for later dates, up from the high $38s at the start of that week, and C5 West Australia-Qingdao in the high $18s, up from the mid-$15s. Both routes were driven by sustained participation from all major miners rather than a single charterer clearing a backlog, which is why the BCI 182 5TC pushed through $58,000/day to a fresh year-to-date high before this week’s consolidation.
Bunkers — close of 8 September 2026
| Port | VLSFO $/mt | Change | MGO $/mt | Change |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Singapore | 850.00 | +8.00 | 1,266.00 | +18.50 |
| Rotterdam | 695.00 | +12.50 | 1,370.00 | -47.00 |
| Fujairah | 867.50 | +18.50 | 1,475.00 | +20.00 |
| Piraeus | 825.50 | +9.00 | 1,530.50 | +9.00 |
Two points worth flagging. First, these are Tuesday’s assessments — they were set before Brent moved through $100, so the crude rally has not yet reached delivered bunker prices. If Brent holds, Wednesday and Thursday prints will be materially firmer, and voyage estimates built on Tuesday’s numbers are already stale. Second, the Rotterdam MGO print fell $47.00 while Rotterdam VLSFO rose $12.50 — an unusual divergence that widened the Rotterdam distillate-to-residual spread sharply. Vessels burning MGO in the ECA on Continent business have a short window there.
Compliance cost adds to the picture: the EUA settled at EUR 85.33 ($98.82), which prices the carbon cost of offsetting one tonne of VLSFO at $316.22/mt under the full 100% phase-in applying in 2026. On a Rotterdam stem that is roughly 45% again on top of the fuel invoice itself.
What We Are Watching
- Whether Brent holds $100. A sustained break translates into roughly $30-50/mt on VLSFO within a week and compresses TCE on long-haul fronthaul business faster than it does on short round voyages.
- Panamax Atlantic replenishment. The Week 36 report already flagged thinning fresh cargo and building tonnage. A second week of that turns a soft print into a trend.
- Capesize consolidation after a year-to-date high. Miner activity has been consistent rather than spiky, which argues for a plateau rather than a correction, but prompt Pacific tonnage is the number to watch.
- Rotterdam MGO spread. Either the residual or the distillate print corrects; the current gap is not a stable relationship.
